Hello, we’re the Bee Lovely Bees!

It’s hard work being a bee. When we’re not raising our sisters as larvae, we’re gathering pollen to feed them, nectar to make into honey, tree resin to paint the insides of our hives, water to quench the colony’s collective thirst, and finally, making beeswax to build our combs out of. Our human keepers take some of this for themselves, and in return they give us spacious, safe dwellings to last us through the harsh weather that rolls through Wisconsin all year round. It really makes our lives easier – and more productive!

Some of our queens are from Wisconsin, while most of them were born of a professional breeding program as far away as California. We workers were all born and raised here, and though all of us will come and go (even our queens will pass on), we maintain a strong hive identity. Deciding when and what to build, what flowers to visit, and whether we want more sisters or brothers to keep us company – we do everything democratically at Bee Lovely. And since our hives are intimately connected to the lives of our keepers and whether they can bring the wonderful things we make in our hives to other people out there, we’ve decided to lend them a tarsus or two and tell people all about our progress – new things out in the Apiary, and new things coming to the site. Some of the drones are thinking about learning how to improve the Bee Lovely site. (It’s about time they did something useful around here!)

Plus our keepers keep telling us about all sorts of neat things humans have been learning about us and our sisters. We could have told them everything they wanted to know if they only knew how to dance the dance! Anyway, we have heard that honeybees everywhere are in trouble, so we’ll try to give you a bit of the buzz on what’s happening with bees everywhere. At least when there isn’t a huge nectar flow keeping us busy!

So look to the Bee Lovely Blog in the future to keep tabs on our collective consciousness.
